Climbing Mountains on the Double 9th Day

2016-10-19

It is a local custom to climb mountains on the Double 9th Festival (the ninth day of the ninth lunar month). On this day Hangzhounese often eat Double Ninth cakes. During the Southern Song Dynasty, Hangzhounese believed that the cherished chrysanthemum would promise longevity, and that the fruit of the medicinal cornel would keep away evil spirits. So, on the Double 9th Festival, local people climb mountains to pick the ingredients that they need to protect themselves.

Having found these plants they will drink white spirits prepared with chrysanthemum and the fruit of medicinal cornel to protect them from harmful evil spirits. A wise thing to do, don’t you think?
