Brief of Yunhe Cultural Square
Yunhe Cultural Square(运河文化广场) is one of the most interesting and lively place in north Hangzhou. It is the seat of the government office buildings of the Gongshu District. It is home to the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal Museum and the Gongshu Library.
Yunhe Cultural Square is an open-air living room and playground of all ages and interests. Kids go skating, adults perform the collective square dance. Dou Kong Zhu(a traditional sport unique to Beijing), flying kites and writing calligraphy are common pastimes.
During National Holiday, the music fountain mesmerizes the locals and tourist alike. Yunhe Culture Square is festive during nights, especially during weekends and holidays. During Fireworks Festival, you can see the beautiful fireworks display, which generally occurs in each autumn. In Lantern Festival (the 15th day of the 1st lunar month), the streets nearby will be enveloped by strings of red lanterns. Furthermore, an eye-opening lantern show will be staged in Yunhe Culture Square. These lanterns shaped after animals, castles and the zodiac animal of the New Year, are very appealing. People from far and wide throng this square on this special day. Vendors seize this chance to sell the cheap and chick fares, such as glittering headwears, toys, snacks and clothes. It is a perfect time for people watching.
Yunhe Culture Square neighbors Gong Chen Bridge. Nearby this is a new shopping plaza named Yunhe Shang Jie (Canal Upper Street运河上街), and a 5-star hotel.
Crossing the Gongchen Bridge, you can visit 5 museums in a single day. They are: China Fan Museum, China Umbrella Museum, China Knives, Scissors and Swords Museum, Hangzhou Arts & Crafts Museum and Workmanship Demonstration Pavilion. If you have 2 days’ break, check the Yunhe Tiandi (Canal World) 30min’s walking distance away. Movies, delicacies and amazing canal experiences await you there.
