Hangzhou’s Eight Forest-Featured Towns2018-01-30
Recently, the Zhejiang Forest Care Committee officially awarded the title of “Zhejiang Forest City” to Xiaoshan District and Chun’an County of Hangzhou. In addition, Hangzhou has now established eight forest-featured towns, where the forest coverage amounts to 65.54%, leading the provincial capitals for three consecutive years. Where are these eight forest-featured towns? and what great scenery does each of them possess?
Luniao Leisure Forest Town, Yuhang District
Luniao Town, a protection zone of China’s biosphere and a state-level forest park, is situated in the northeast of Yuhang District, adjacent to Anji County and Lin’an District. Luniao Town is the only town without any industrial estates in Yuhang District. It has a forest coverage rate of 88%, two province-level natural reserves, and the most intact biodiversity resource in Yuhang District.
Here one can find tufted deer, clouded leopards, taxus mairei and many other rare and wild species. The Beitiao Stream, from Anji, flows through the town and complements the surrounding mountains perfectly. Its natural endowments and environmental carrying capacity lay an environmental foundation for the rising forestry, and forest leisure & well-being industry.
Dashu Bamboo Town, Chun’an County
Dashu Town of Chun’an County forestry area totals 203,000 hectares, among which the moso bamboo forest covers 43,000 hectares. Its forest coverage rate is 82.6% and in 2016, Dashu Town was awarded the title “Most beautiful bamboo country in Hangzhou”. It is known for holding successful activities like Hangzhou Qiandao Lake (Dashu) Moso Bamboo Culture Festival, and the Bamboo Handicrafts Creation Competition.
Fenshui Forest Tour&Leisure Town, Tonglu County
Fenshui Town in Tonglu County is located at the interior junction of Tonglu, Fuyang, Lin’an and Chun’an. As the deputy center of Tonglu County, it lies on the golden tourism line of Hangzhou–Qiandao Lake–Huangshan Mountain. Fenshui Town has a long cultural history and is overflowing with natural scenery. Here you can see green mountains and clear streams as well as the 14.5 square kilometer Tianxi Lake. All in all, the town enjoys exceptional advantages due to its ecological environment.
Eshan She Minority Village Bamboo Industry Town, Tonglu County
Eshan She Minority Village is the only minority village in Hangzhou. In recent years, it has developed a wealth of sightseeing eco-trails, parking lots, sightseeing pavilions and sightseeing decks. It also introduced the guesthouse economy, and constructed a “Forest Home” that integrates sightseeing with catering and accommodation.
At the same time, Eshan She Minority Village is also a good place for hiking, rock climbing and excursions. Shanha Ancient Path and She Minority Village Ancient Path have paved the way for a new route for leisure hiking and climbing, which connects Xinfeng Gaojie Bamboo Zone and Yizhi Gorge together with the Dragon Peak 2A-level Scenic Area and the Xinfeng Mount Daijia 3A-level Scenic Area.
Zhongtai Bamboo Crafts Town, Yuhang District
Zhongtai Bamboo Crafts Town in Yuhang District lies in Zijing Village, the “hometown of the Chinese bamboo flute”, in Zhongtai Sub-district, Yuhang District. Here, the low-lying mountains have gentle slopes, and fertile soil in deep layers, all of which is suitable for the growth of bitter bamboo. The whole village now has a bitter bamboo forest of more than 12,000 hectares which is the ideal ingredient for making bamboo flutes.
With a forest coverage rate of 66.3%, Zhongtai Town forms part of Banshan District. This sub-district has a bitter bamboo forest covering 28,000 hectares and is the largest one in China. Zijing Village is the first to establish the “bitter bamboo germplasm resource library”. It is a state-level bitter bamboo directive breeding standardized demonstration plot. In 2009, it was named as the “Ethnic Art Village of Zhejiang Province”, and in 2011, it was rewarded the title of “Hometown of Chinese Bamboo Flute” by the Chinese Light Industry Association. In 2014, it was successfully awarded the title of National Geographical Indication Protected Product.
Linqi Forest Economy Town, Chun’an County
Linqi Town in Chun’an County majors in traditional Chinese medicinal materials, one of the characteristics of a forest economy. The whole town possesses more than 400 kinds of traditional Chinese medicinal substances, among which the most widely distributed are dogwood, raspberry, common hogfennel root, sealwort, mangosteen, serissa serissoide, rhizoma graminei and so on. The area of traditional Chinese medicinal materials reaches 23,000 hectares, and the annual turnover amounts to more than 2 billion yuan.
Fuchun River Leisure &Tour Forest Town, Tonglu County
Fuchun River Town is located beside the beautiful Fuchun River in the southwest of Tonglu County. It is one of the first batch of characteristic towns in Hangzhou. Fuchun River (Reed) Country Slow Life Display zone, the first country slow life display zone in Zhejiang Province, which features village tourism was also established here.
The beautiful Fuchun River Town with its natural ecological environment, has a forest coverage rate of 83%. Reed Slow Life Zone’s air quality reaches national primary standards where the negative oxygen ions per cubic centimeter exceed 10,000. Surface water in the zone reaches national I-level.
Daoshi Pecan Town, Lin’an District
Daoshi Town lies in the northwest of Lin’an District and is situated at the upstream of Zhexi Gorge, a 4A state-level scenic area and the source of Changhua River, which is Qiantang River’s first-level tributary. The whole town covers an area of 139 square kilometers and its average altitude is more than 500 meters. It also abounds in pecan, persimmon, and other well-known agricultural products.
The pecan industry is Daoshi Town’s pillar industry. The whole town’s pecan forest covers an area of more than 130,000 hectares, producing approximately 5000 tons of dried seeds annually. There are 11 pecan processing factories with an annual processing capacity of more than 6000 tons. The town has the largest pecan forest and the largest pecan output in China. In 2009, it was awarded the title of “No. 1 Pecan Town in China” by China’s economic forest association.
